Karate Practice

Friends and Neighbors: Has your family expressed interest in learning self-defense? Maybe you have the sense that they’d enjoy exploring the ways of the Martial Arts? Or maybe it’s you who wants to learn. Excellent call!

Karate-Do practice promotes mental and physical health and improves focus. The practice of karate tones all parts of the body, develops coordination, quickens reflexes and builds stamina. For kids the practice is a great equalizer because all bodies have their unique strengths as well as challenges.

Rochester Shotokan Karate Dojo (ROCSKA) is affiliated with Shotokan Karate of America (SKA), a national nonprofit organization with international affiliates teaching karate-do since 1956.

“ To win one hundred victories in one hundred battles is not the highest skill. To subdue the enemy without fighting is the highest skill.” -Master Gichin Funakoshi

Kanji Introduction

Kanji 漢字 is one of three Japanese writing systems. The other two are the Japanese syllabic scripts Hiragana and katakana. Kanji is the oldest and is a picture-based system from China made up of logograms, which are characters that represent whole words. The Japanese term Kanji literally means “Writing of the Han people”. It is written with the same characters as in traditional Chinese to refer to the character writing system. After a period of variation and evolution, Chinese characters were standardized under the Qin Dynasty (221–206 BCE). Over the millennia, these characters have evolved into well-developed styles of Chinese characters as an art form, combining purely visual art and interpretation of the literary meaning.

Examples below:

天 = Sky

人= Human

土 = Earth / Soil

平 = Peace Literal meaning of the two characters are Harmony and Balance.
